Trustee Area Elections

Overview

On November 7, 2017, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Board of Education members took action to select the Green Map to move forward for approval by the Orange County Committee on School District Organization (OCCSDO).

On January 18, 2018, the Orange County Committee on School District Organization took action to approve the Green Map as proposed by PYLUSD Board of Education members.

Lastly, 
on March 15, 2018, the California Department of Education (CDE) took action to waive election requirements of Education Code (EC) sections 5019-5021 and 5030 for the establishment of trustee areas and adoption of by-trustee area elections.

On February 8, 2022, the district's Trustee Area Map was updated and rebalanced with 2020 Census data. Trustees approved it to submit to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.

PYLUSD will utilize the map seen below in moving forward with by-trustee area voting, which first began with the November 2018 Election.

Will this impact where my student goes to school?

No, the district’s transition from at-large to by-trustee area voting will have no impact on school attendance zones. 

How many trustee areas will be established?
In alignment with Board Bylaw (BB) 9110, five separate by-trustee voting areas will be established within the district boundary map. 

How did PYLUSD determine the trustee area map?
The district retained demographers to develop several map options for purposes of discussion. Two public hearings were conducted prior to the creation of map options. Two additional public hearings were also conducted following the creation of map options. After receiving community feedback and additional input from the Board of Education, a the Green Map was selected and sent to the Orange County Committee on School District Organization (OCCSDO) for final approval. The OCCSDO approved the map during a meeting on January 18, 2018.

When will this change go into effect?
By-trustee area voting was first utilized for the 2018 General Election on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

What qualifications must I meet to run for the Board of Education?
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Registered voter
  • Citizen of California
  • Resident of the school district - must reside within their own trustee area and be elected only by registered voters of that same trustee area
  • Not legally disqualified from holding civil office - any person who has been convicted of a felony involving the giving, accepting, or offering of a bribe, embezzlement or theft of public funds, extortion, perjury, or conspiracy to commit any such crime, under California law and the law of another state, the United State of America, or another country, is not eligible to be a candidate for office or be a Board member except when he/she has been granted a pardon in accordance with law.
