We hope you are enjoying your winter recess. As you may have heard, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently announced that free COVID-19 at-home test kits will be made available to all K-12 public school students as they return to school following winter break. This includes students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD).
It is important to know that there is no statewide testing mandate for students returning to school. The state is not requiring a documented negative test to return to the classroom. These efforts are simply meant to increase access to optional tests for K-12 public school students at no cost.
The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is currently working with all school districts in Orange County to distribute the COVID-19 test kits. At this time, OCDE has not received the test kits from CDPH; however, they anticipate receiving them sometime next week. Therefore, the tests will not be available to our students prior to their return to school on Monday, January 3, 2022. The district will update you when we have more information about when the kits will be available for families to pick up.
In addition, on December 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shortened their recommended time for isolation from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others. They have also updated their recommended quarantine period for those exposed to COVID-19.
Despite these new recommendations from the CDC, the CDPH and Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) have not yet shifted their guidance for isolation or quarantine periods. As has been the case since the start of the pandemic, the district must wait until CDPH and OCHCA update their guidance to alter any school district protocols.
