To compete in the final oral round, students had to pass a written test given last weekend to 105 students from across Orange County schools. Many of them were winners at their local school’s spelling bee. Only 47 students advanced to this past weekend’s final oral round.
The winner emerged after 23 rounds of competition lasting five hours. The competition started at 9 a.m. and by 1:30 p.m. after 15 rounds with only four students remaining, a break was called. According to Spelling Bee Master Emon Kane, “This was the longest and strongest competition over the past 10 years. It was also the first time a lunch break was called.”
Some of the words in the competition were “ostentatious” and “sayonara.” The final winning word that Samuel spelled after five hours of intense competition was “editorial.”
