PYLUSD declares a "Soda Free Summer"

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) has declared June 25 through August 3, 2018, as a “Soda Free Summer.” Adopted by the Board of Education, the “Soda Free Summer” initiative helps to promote a healthier lifestyle through eliminating the sweetened beverage over the summer months.

PYLUSD students, employees, and community members are encouraged to give up the sugary, fizzy drink and enjoy some of the following alternate options instead:
  • Water
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Vegetable juice
  • Non-fat or low-fat milk
  • Light yogurt and fruit smoothie
  • Unsweetened tea
According to “Soda Free Summer” officials, a 20-ounce bottle of soda carries 58 milligrams of caffeine, which can lead to difficulty concentrating and sleeping and an increased heart rate, among other things. That same bottle contains 17 teaspoons of sugar, making soda the leading sugar source for Americans. Consuming one of those 20-ounce bottles a day can lead to a 25-pound weight gain by the end of the year.

Once again, a “Soda Free Summer” will take place June 25 through August 3, 2018. In PYLUSD, good nutrition and learning go hand in hand!
